Percentage of People with and without Disabilities receiving Medicaid, 2014
Medicaid provides health coverage to children, low-income adults, individuals with disabilities, and low-income seniors. These maps used 2013 CMS Medicare and Medicaid Statistical Supplement to identify and compare the percentage of people with disabilities and people without disabilities (i.e., children, low income adults and seniors, and other recipients) using Medicaid for health coverage. Comparison of the maps shows that people with disabilities are more likely to have Medicaid (US average is 29.3% with a range of 13.7% in New Hampshire to 63.8% in the District of Columbia) than people without disabilities do (US average of 25.7% with a range of 12.6% in Virginia to 40.1% in California). While people with disabilities have higher Medicaid coverage, Medicaid is often attached to stereotype and less preferred by service providers, resulting in access to only limited healthcare service providers. Therefore, coverage by Medicaid does not always guarantee quality health care services.
