Percentage of People with and without Disabilities Age 65 and Above who Have Private Health Insurance, 2016
Private health insurance excludes health coverage from public sources such as Medicaid and Medicare. We divided data into two age groups, age 18 to 64 and age 65 and above. The data range (quartiles in the legends) for the two groups was combined across this map and the previous map for easier comparison. The difference between people and people without disabilities in private insurance is strikingly different among the working age group. People with disabilities are far less likely to have private insurance use. This may be relevant to lower employment and economic status of people with disabilities. The trend shows that people with disabilities are more likely to have private health insurance when they are older, while private health coverage decreases for older people without disabilities. The latter may reflect the increase in Medicare use among the older population.
