Percentage of People with and without Disabilities Age 65 and Above who Do Not Have Health Insurance, 2016
Health insurance is critical for access to healthcare. An individual without health insurance is at higher risk for needing high cost emergency medical care as compared to those who have access to preventive and ongoing health care services. Access to health care therefore impacts the ability to live healthy in the community without moving into institutions, and therefore is an important indicator for community participation. This indicator and the next indicator show the percentage of people with and without disabilities who do not have health insurance. Overall, people with disabilities and older people are more likely to have insurance. While people with and without disabilities both show similar percentage ranges in lacking health coverage, there is a large difference in health coverage between the two age groups. People with disabilities for the working age group show a US average of 13.6% with a range of 3.5% in Massachusetts to 20.9% in Oklahoma, while for the senior group, people with disabilities show a US average of 0.7% with a range of 0% in Vermont to 1.9% in Nevada.
